Special School District of St. Louis County

District Overview

Bryson MaySpecial School District of St. Louis County (SSD) has two distinct functions – it provides special education services for all St. Louis County students with disabilities, and it provides technical education for area high school students.

Today, more than 24,000 students receive special education services or technical education from SSD.

The vast majority of students who receive special education services – about 97 percent – receive services from SSD staff in their home school in the district in which they live. About 750 students with more significant disabilities are educated in one of the District’s five special education schools.

The District offers a full range of related services, such as speech therapy, social work services, occupational therapy and assistive technology services, which are considered during the development of the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

In addition, a variety of resources and workshops are available to support families of students with disabilities. The SSD Parent Education and Diversity Awareness program maintains the Family and Community Resource Center and plans parent workshop programs throughout the year.

SSD also operates two technical high schools — North Technical High School in Florissant and South Technical High School in Sunset Hills — that offer more than 30 career and technical education programs to about 1,800 high school students throughout St. Louis County. In addition, a tuition-based adult education program – Licensed Practical Nursing – is offered through the District’s Applied Technology Services Program.
